Training elsewhere is forbidden

Controlling behavior in a gym/academy is a red flag that must not be overlooked. Some gyms may discourage or outright forbid students from training at other gyms or schools. This controlling approach can have detrimental effects on personal growth and learning. It limits exposure to diverse training styles and techniques, preventing students from broadening their knowledge and skills. Remember, in a healthy gym environment, students should be free to pursue their training journey with the utmost freedom and autonomy.

Monetary demands for belt promotions

Requiring students to pay, often expensive fees for belt promotions is highly unethical. Promotions should be based on skill, dedication, and progress in the sport, not on financial contributions. A gym that values integrity will never exploit its students in this manner.

Instructor engages in inappropriate relationships

One of the most serious and damaging toxic signs is an instructor engaging in inappropriate relationships, particularly sleeping with students. Such behavior is completely unacceptable, as it creates an unsafe and unethical environment. Students must feel respected and safe while training, and instructors must maintain professional boundaries.

Hierarchical monopoly

A toxic gym may be structured around a hierarchical monopoly, where only one person holds absolute power and decision-making authority. This concentration of power can lead to favoritism, disregard for others' opinions and stifle the gym's potential for growth and improvement.
