When athletes are coached with positive reinforcement, the brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is associated with pleasure and motivation. Dopamine helps to increase focus, attention, and motivation, all of which are essential for peak performance.
In contrast, when athletes are coached with intimidation, the brain releases cortisol, a stress hormone. Cortisol can impair cognitive function, memory, and decision-making. It can also lead to anxiety, stress, and low self-esteem.

In the long term, coaching with positive reinforcement can help to build athletes' resilience and self-confidence. This can lead to better performance, even under pressure. In contrast, coaching with intimidation can lead to athletes becoming more anxious and stressed, which can undermine performance.
